Hip Hop

What’s in the Shakedeck v.4: UG Edition

blame it on Shake September 28, 2010

Around the beginning of the new millennium my musical playlist consisted of about 75% indie hip hop. Any and everything Rhymesayers / Definitive Jux / QN5 / Demigodz / Stones Throw / Weathermen / Psycho+Logical related dropped, I copped. Simple as that. Everyone from Sage Francis to Aesop Rock, Atmosphere to Cunninlynguists, Dilated Peoples, Cage, Copywrite, Louis Logic, Apathy, Celph Titled, Eyedea & Abilities, Mr. Lif, Brother Ali, DOOM… you get the point. And while the percentage might have changed a bit throughout the past few years (be it running 2dbz, indie artists releasing less material, the need for some random ignorance in my life, etc), I will always hold those years close to my heart. And with that sappy story said, I’ve put together a compilation of some of the songs that frequented my CD player. I’m sure this won’t be the last.

  • Blackaa

  • tgrady321

Good shit…some really good tracks right here. Rugged Man’s verse on “Uncommon Valor” is one of my favorites of all-time.

  • Rockets

Nice playlist. I already have 14 of 16 of these in my itunes library :)

  • Jonnielluminati

This is fake, the real tracklist has about 5 or 6 Lupe songs on it

  • othug

Dope. Shake bringin back the Cannibal Ox.

  • Bryan

you should make this a bimonthly post, shake…it reminds me of some of the shit in my library that I don’t listen to as much

  • Onederin

Oh, I remember these days. I had that thirst for something different and outside of the box because I was tired of everyone around me bumping Nelly. Discovered Eyedea first through battling and then everything branched off from there.

Now I honestly can’t stand this a lot of the artists on there. Besides Murs, PH and Tonedeff, I don’t really check for any of these guys now. Maybe play a couple songs for nostalgic purposes (or some friends who are still stuck in this time). Now I say, fuck that shit and bump Lil B at least once a day. lolz

Being signed to a record label=/=”ignorant”. There’s a reason why many of the artists, however dope, will never make it.

  • loot

For real tho, why has the underground scene quieted down so much since the early 2000’s?

  • swaggajay

    what is the password?

  • Higgs

Cage man, that’s the shit. Down The Left Hand Path? Fuckin hell that’s dope.

Shake, I know i’ve hated on the lack of indie music as of late, but it’s good to know that you at least know these artists, let alone listen to them…much respect

  • LookmomimaG!!!

Missing LMNO and the visionaries, what about mars Ill, Urban Ops, or Braille???? Next series shake you should definetly post these Artis up bro

  • what kind of headphones do you use???/ anybody????

DONT SAY BEATS. i know its stuff better than beats. and cheaper

  • @Shake… No wonder I like this site. Literally EVERYTHING you named, was in my cd player in the exact same time period. I was much more obsessed with the Eastern Conference crew than anybody else though, kuz before I was into Indie hip-hop I was a Juggalo, and Old Cage cruises along those lines. Btw you forgot to mention my man CHINO XL! Def my fav artist around that time! Canibus & Tech N9ne were getting played like my x-gf as well.

  • Ayyoo

    New Kanye track on illroots

  • JoJoThePieMan

Let me second that June track… I remember listening to that on repeat way back in ’03. Talk about a fucking time-warp!!! I loved that entire RJD2 album, esp. the track at the very end

  • //

I need some albums from back in early 2000’s
whats up? any body gt recommendations?

  • danny_

That Murs joint “Varsity Blues” is dope.

  • nah_dude

  • Ken

Wow, i like it shake. Some of these guys are still doin it. I like where your going with this one. haha

  • “I need some albums from back in early 2000’s
whats up? any body gt recommendations?”

    Cannibal Ox-The Cold Vien (2001)

  • dope ass line up!

    classic material

  • I just want to know how one goes from listening to those songs to listening to Lil B. Lil B is officially the worst of all time. Please, listen to anyone over Lil B, Waka Flocka, Gucci Mane, MC Hammer, I don’t care. Lil B sounds like he records through a laptop microphone, and he spits with no effort in his horrible recording voice.

  • Playlist is tight…better than your fav mixtape…Lil’ B I bump when im too high to care

  • There are many many better artists nowadays to listen to high, like B.o.B, Kid CuDi, Wiz Khalifa, XV and Laws. Lil B is a waste of time.

  • haha

its funny none of these artists are ever featured on this site.

Very nice Shake! I always try to keep either of Mr. Lif’s Emergency Rations or iPhantom in regular rotation. Same with Living Legends. I’ve probably got some old mix cds from early 2000s that look a lot like this playlist.

Oh and plenty of these artists are featured on this site. I’m pretty sure most of August Atmosphere was being featured a lot cuz of their album coming out. I wish some of these artists were featured more!

  • haha

ACTUALLY if you look at the amount of work these guys produce, naww. its not much.

  • where is Blu?

  • Onederin

Guessing that’s directed at me. I was being a little sarcastic, but I listen to Lil B sometimes. He’s good for when you just want some nignorant shit (like Meka would say). Can’t take his music that seriously (least I don’t), but I can’t hate on him for finding a niche in the music world. Even if some of his listeners are laugh at him.

  • RussDa59

u stole this fuckin album artwork from kendrick lamar…smh…

  • Per

Now THIS is my shit.. Great tape, shake, though I got about everything on it (minus that non-prophets song I think)..

  • shakessister

  • re-upping now.

  • vera
