Jay-Z To Score The Great Gatsby

blame it on Meka January 2, 2013

A few weeks ago (I believe it was during the trailers for Life Of Pi) I saw the trailer for the 2013 adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, and The Throne’s “No Church For The Wild” played throughout. It turns out that Jay, alongside The Bullits, will actually score the film.

Jay-Z is confirmed to compose the score to The Great Gatsby, alongside The Bullitts. Jeymes Samuel of The Bullitts took to Twitter [on] December 30th to share the news.

“Jay-Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby! It is too DOPE for words!” Samuel said. – Billboard

The film itself debuts May 10th.

Attach a recognizable urban name to attract younger viewers to half a decade old source material. derp

um, this movie is based off a book that was written in 1925…

I may be nitpicking but.. “upcoming CLASSIC” ? people seriously need to stop just throwing the word classic around like this. Classic means timeless or stands the test of time, so to call something classic before it even comes out is just nonsensical. I have no other particular thoughts on this post, who knows maybe this score will wind up being a classic one day. But we’ll have to wait at least five years + to make that determination.

No Jeymes Samuel is scoring the film and Jay-Z is giving him some vocals but will get most of the credit. Jeymes is a singer/writer/producer and will contribute a lot more than Jay-Z will. Unless Jay-Z has been practising production, reading into film scoring and how to enhance drama/emotion whilst driving the narrative and cueing musical components with visual ones then he’s just a vocal contribution and not the score composer. Jeymes gets the credit for the above.

@DQ I think he’s referring to the story the of The Great Gatsby as a classic, which has been out for almost 100 year.

Saying Jay is scoring the film is like saying he owns the Nets. Yeah ‘technically’ you can say that, but in reality someone else is doing all of the work and they are attaching his name for hype and marketing.

  • An adaptation of a book about white people problems that spans over 200 pages.

  • Fitzgerald is clawing out of his grave!

Wow, what great news, a fucking sample jockey (misuse of term, but he really just rides samples) who can’t produce, play an instrument, or read/write music is “composing” the score to an adaptation of classic literature. What a joke. Fuck Jay-Z, allow another black man with more talent to get some fucking shine for once.
