Lauryn Hill – Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)

blame it on Miss_Peas May 4, 2013

Due to her ongoing legal issues, Ms. Hill was “forced” to sign a new recording deal with Sony. And with that new deal, comes new music (which is available on iTunes). Take a listen and see what she had to say on Tumblr below.

Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline. I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music… but the message is still there. In light of Wednesday’s tragic loss (of former label mate Chris Kelly), I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today’s unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked!

  • wat

I wanna listen but only available for purchase? D:

  • wat

Nvm, a soundcloud player was added after my comment. Yay.

  • wat

She’s so fucking lyrical, sheesh. The fact that she’s also an amazing singer makes her a living legend automatically.

  • Chuck E

Kids, this is what drugs do to you. Just know this.

You can be the most talented person in the world, with so much energy & passion, and you can go on to achieve things you never thought could be accomplished and earn accolades, money, & fame (all of which you deserve) beyond your wildest dreams, but it doesn’t matter if you don’t know how to deal with it; if you can’t deal with the dips that life IS going to throw you, no matter who you are. If you can’t keep your head about it, be mature & take responsibility for your actions, then you will it & yourself right along with it. You can shut the whole world out, thinking that *they’re* the disease, & blame everyone & the MYSTERIOUS GOVERNMENT for the bad things that happen as a result of your irresponsibility, but in the end, none of that won’t matter & you won’t be able to cover up what’s REALLY going on with you. It’ll be QUITE clear eventually to everybody.

Really. You were the greatest. But, there is no one else to blame but yourself.

  • j

not to be that guy who doesn’t automatically like a new lauryn hill song but does she sound kinda clumsy or is it me?

  • TheDon

This is not what I expected or really wanted so I complain. judgements.

She sound like Nas. and this might not even make the album?! WOW Ms. Hill stay encourage. keep at the path that God has placed you on. everybody hasn’t been called out of the world. we all been called but only a few are chosen. You definitely are chosen for a higher purpose.Keep Going!!! GOD IS WITH US
“insecure assholes looking for a ticket to ride on somebody like the picket it’s fucking wicked shame on a nigga” LOL WHOA!!!!

  • QBN

Sorry… the lyrics I’m are deep, but she’s rushing her delivery and it just sounds like rambling. And the beat is garbage..

  • Stay Frosty

Jesus Lauryn, the hell is this?

  • Lyrically dope.. She’s talented still but this sucks, who made her put this out? Solja Boy mixed this down?

  • Tag

“Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline. I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music…”

^^^This explains why this track sounds like a mess. I appreciate the message, but it definitely sounds like some Jedi Mind Tricks type ish…

  • Swagg

It’s crazy that her wack shit is better than a lot of what is out. this is rushed and she still spittin some shit. imagine if she really wanted to put out music. Thank you to whoever is suing her atleast we’re getting something from here

  • PSA

Kashara Williams of linden, NJ & Mercer University Macon, GA is burning dudes and females on purpose. She has aids and is taking it out of everybody else. There are current lawsuits being filled against her right now. If you are in either area, be on the lookout and call detective at either police departments in those locations. fb /sheektastic

This was rushed. AFTER A DECADE THIS IS WHAT SHE HAS FOR THE MASSES. Rushed? What a joke.

  • david

I’m a fan of her but this is wack as fuck. She’s just speaking cliche negative shit about society with big words thrown in. People will praise her as conscious but anyone’s capable of doing what she’s doing here if they had a newspaper and a dictionary.

    • Vick

It’s funny you would say that seeing how all rappers now a day have dr. Sues flows like we are all 5 years old lol.

So this is what an eargasm is. I Loved it! She’s dropping SERIOUS knowledge while ridding a dope ass beat. I feel bad that some of your ears are damaged (due to the likes of Nicki, Wayne, etc). I LOVE the beat and what she says. I won’t lie I had to listen to it a couple of times for it to catch on and for me to get the lyrical content…but I absolutely LOVE this.

  • david

I just read an article about her tax evasion. She said the only reason she’s in debt is because of the major label she was signed to because they put artists through a bunch of “traps and manipulations”.

She plans to get herself out of this debt, that she blames on major labels, by signing to another major label?

Apparently the debt amounts to $1m. If she signed to an independent label she’d make $3 or $4 per album sold. If she managed to sell 250/350k copies she’d be out of debt. Then there’s merch sales, sponsorship deals, gigs/tours/festivals (if she signed with an independent label the contract would say Lauryn gets ALL profit from these and the label takes none). If she worked hard enough, even after tax, she’d make millions

  • marty mcfly

THIS SHIT IS DOPE PERIOD. Now you can talk about her being crazy or owing taxes or whatever you want but this shit is DOPE !!! I hope Andre 3k hears this shit cause Lord knows he needs to fucking make a rap song or two but on a lyrical level and on a style level this is that hoverboard rap I was talking about early today on that last Lil Wayne post. Alot of these MCs still kicking that regular skateboard simple ABC type shit.

  • j

this is pretty good for a talib kweli parody

  • marty mcfly

I dont know of any Talib or Nas songs that sound like this so I think this so im pretty sure this is just her artistic ability. Go back and listen to Final Hour from back n the day, she definitely knows what she’s doing and saying. The neurotic part sure fits with the beat and all and the way people will speak negatively about only makes her lyrics more truthful imo. You aint gotta like it but keep it real, you know this is some other level type shit right here. #Hoverboard rap

  • marty mcfly

..Nas songs that sound like this so im pretty sure…. and the way people will speak negatively about IT only…. My bad.

  • david

@Marty no doubt she still got skill but this track is all-round trash. Beat’s messy, mixing/mastering is an insult to her, lyrics are miserable ramblings rather than art and the tempo is too quick for all the syllables she’s tryna throw in.

The track’s rushed. Can’t put too much blame on her for that but the track’s a disappointment. I think if she was working with a talented producer that’d pay dividends coz they’d know her style and make the beat match it.

An inspired 3K/Hill collab would be a classic though

  • Bigg El Dogg

  • jwiii

    definitely sound neurotic

  • j

sounds like she needs to sleep some. nah honestly the pot calling the devil narcissist line was pretty sick but overall the stylistic shortcomings of the song mean what she’s saying doesn’t communicate well

  • Kashara Williams of linden, NJ & Mercer University Macon, GA is burning dudes and females on purpose. She has aids and is taking it out of everybody else. There are current lawsuits being filled against her right now. If you are in either area, be on the lookout and call detective at either police departments in those locations. fb /sheektastic

  • This is pretty damn terrible.

  • marty mcfly

@david, I dont think the tracks trash. I think the way it sounds is exactly how she wanted it to sound and I dont think the lyrics are miserable ramblings either. I do think its art and on top of that its MC genius imo and no its not too fast for me. Maybe its cause I grew up listening to E-40 but idk, but yeah this song is lyrical genius in my opinion. Takes me back to the underground times and how things sounded before every song was posted on the net. When not only did MCs have to have lyrics but also style. Whether she works with a talented producer or just raps over whatever she obviously is at a point of mastered craft so even her worst rhymes is gonna be dope imo. These lyrics you call miserable ramblings have more substance and wordplay then alot of so called hot MCs whole album and its just one song without even a hook. Neurotic Society is DOPE!!!

  • Dafino Wurd

A lot of y’all missed the whole point…it is supposed to be neurotic…and based on most of the negative comments about it being wack…SHE ACCOMPLISHED THE MISSION…NEUROTICISM!!! Annnd she gittin paid for it!
Lauryn is a BAAAAAD sister…can you dig it…DUG!!!

  • marty mcfly

I think people are more scared and concerned of lauryn’s problems then she is herself. I think she just looks at he tax issue as something she’ll just overcome and come out standing on the other side just fine. I dont think she is in no way bowing down to or intimidated by the entertainment business.

  • DG

Those that are hating on this forget the fact that she said she was required to release this sounds lie to me she didnt want to. sounds like it was a demo.

  • Kanutz

Doesn’t sound like a song…more like a spitfire wordplay session. In a way it’s dope, but in a way you can hear in the rushed delivery that a gun was put to her head to do this. :-/

  • The reason for the rushed delivery is to personify our fast paced society which moves at a fast rate. The rapid fire spiting is on edge and sporadic, just like our society.

  • 1

She needs to release the version of this she recorded with a Black Milk beat, waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better

  • david

@Marty I don’t think the song’s too fast, just it’s too fast for her to be spittin all those syllables on. Agree with you with what you said about style though. There aren’t many ‘hot’ MCs with style so hopefully she can help fill that void. Underground heads will buy regardless

  • Michelle

She only needs those who understand what she’s SAYING to listen. If all you’re looking for is a catchy hook that you can go out and bob your had to, then don’t even bother. However, if you want to hear lyrical poetry then keep listening. The parody of this song and its true meaning is absolutely amazing. I can’t stop listening.

  • Benji james

^^Exactly!!!!!! thank you cuz i felt the same way

  • j

some guys, some guys are only, about… taxing taxing taxiiiiiing

no i’m sure no-one missed the point, everyone can hear what she’s saying and no-one’s failing to understand it. it just sounds like she’s returning the favour to Kweli for Ms. Hill by rambling too many syllables to a mediocre beat in tribute to him
