After running into a past boyfriend at a mutual friend’s wedding, Dessa took her thoughts and decided to do what she does best and put them music. And with Paper Tiger providing the backdrop, Doomtree’s first lady offers up a heart-felt record that she says is the one of the tracks she’s proudest to have written off her upcoming album, Parts of Speech, which drops June 25th (pre-orders available now).
“We saw each other, all dressed up in our Sunday finest, and we did our best to behave like graceful adults, shaking hands with each other’s dates,” she said (to Speakeasy). “A hard breakup can conjure a storm of competing emotions — bitterness, love, jealousy, tenderness, self-pity, velociraptor-crazy fits of rage. ‘Call Off Your Ghost’ is about trying to fall out of a love that has outlasted its relationship. In a larger way, it’s about the struggle to be your best self, even when a lot of lesser, petty feelings compete for expression.”
