A year ago, ELMNT and Boko Maru (Crimson) combined five instrumentals from respected producers and created a 13-minute “audible experience” titled The Mentalist Handbook Of Shadowboxing Through Universes. Wanting to bring it to visual life, the two called on Jay Montenegro who makes his directorial debut with the above short film.
Anime and Hip Hop have an underrated bond, I don’t know where it comes from but it is best displayed by the late Nujabes through his production on the “Samurai Champloo” TV series. That was my inspiration behind this 13 minute short film. I chopped up a few of my favorite anime flicks and edited them using The Mentalist Handbook of Shadowboxing Through Universes as the soundtrack. The footage was lifted from; Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Afro Samurai, Ghost in The Shell, and Cowboy Bebop respectively. Rolls something then press play. – Jay Montenegro
