DJ Mustard Breaks Down "My N*gga"

Sitting down with Hard Knock TV, Mustard speaks on his production process, how family - for better or worse - keeps him focused on music, and much more, before reconstructing the backdrop for his and YG's hit single.

While at SXSW, Mustard put on a show during his stay at the Boiler Room; check that out here.

nigga got some ill ass hi hats

  • jt

    basic beat tho

  • ThinkinUpAMasterPlan

It took him more time to explain how to make the beat then to actually make it.

  • Richardgudnitz

Mustard got in his feelings at 8:18 tho...

in response to mustards, "ok, now what!?!?"

i think WHY the bay is lowkey frustrated with him is because he acts like he crafted that sound on his own... like he invented something that the bay has developed for almost 30 years... THATS whats corny... its not the music.

I'm from the bay, and its like we can't hate because like you said we had 30 years to put out a producer that showcases our sound across the nation and we didn't quite do it. but it took this guy 3 or 4 years? just embarrassing. the only thing we've had since 40 and short is sage and su. those two are the only ones showcasing our sound at a high level. god we need some real emcees to make noise, I'm rooting for lock and moe green

and the bit where he is explaining the difference between a beatmaker and a producer lol imo he is still just a beatmaker.

  • realtalk82

    this beat is still fire

  • SpeakingHarshTruth

He gets too much flak from people. Yes some of his beats sound the same, but then again so do a lot of Pharrell's.

A lot of his beats have the same vibe, but they don't actually sound the same at all...

I'm Different sounds nothing like My Nigga, which sounds nothing like Paranoid, which sounds nothing like Up Down.

Dude knows how to make a hit, there's no denying some of his beats fuckin SLAP.

Ultimately I doubt he has the longevity or actual musical knowledge of someone like Pharrell and will probably have a hot streak and then live off them royalty checks. Nothin wrong with that.

      1. Theres a difference in integrity, knowledge and experience when we're discussing pharrell and his talents. Of Course all his beats are going to sound alike because that's his style.

      2. This nigga doesn't even construct these simple ass beats on his own. This nigga got like 4 producers producing under him, he picks and chooses which beat he wanna throw his crap drums on.

Closing statement, the guy is wack.

  • RealWorldSteve

I promise I'm not hatin'...but it really took two dudes to make this beat?

They should have done another one of his songs, this one is way too simple. IMO you are showing a misconception about producing. It is much more than this. It`s a hit, yes, but damn, show some of his more complex works.

    The intro beats hotter
