Andre 3000 Stars As Jimi Hendrix In First ‘All Is By My Side’ Trailer

blame it on Shake July 3, 2014

Andre “3000” Benjamin will hold the role of Jimi Hendrix in the upcoming biopic, All Is By My Side. Penned by “12 Years A Slave” director John Ridley, the film will cover Hendrix’s life from 1966-67 as an unknown backup guitarist playing New York’s Cheetah Club to making his mark in London’s music scene up until his Monterey Pop triumph.

Why such a short timeline you ask? Well it turns out they never secured the rights to Jimi’s music. Doh!

Check out the first trailer below, and find out if Mr. Ridley and company can make a quality movie about a musician, without their music, on September 26.

I have known for a while now that Jimi’s estate wouldn’t clear his music for the movie. I will say this though 3 stacks could get an oscar nom for this.

Family doesn’t want the films release. They say portrayals are not entirely accurate. Its a shame because the film got decent reviews at festivals it has been show at. #butyallwouldntgiveittoandre3000

    • WJBX!

    • Nahuma Holiday

The family doesn’t own the music, the label still owns it and without cutting them in, financially off top, they have chozen to play the bully and not release the music

  • Arun Gopal

So I’m confused. What will be played instead of Hendrix’s music?

    • Mac Dre

They’re gonna use Hendrix’s covers of other songs, just not the original stuff that he wrote.

  • Bryan Brennick

Im not sayin this won’t b a good flick it’ll probably be alright compared to similar movies like Ray and that Johnny Cash movie but what made those movies good was the story line from begging of their lives to the end and the songs they wrote as to what inspired them. This won’t give nearly as much insight as I’d like to see acting wise I’m sure will be top notch though.

John Ridley actually wrote 12 Years A Slave, not directed.

The film and 3000 garnered great reviews last year when it had it’s festival circuit. And the film is not about his entire life, but instead focuses solely on his relationship with two key women in his life before he became famous. Which makes sense why no Hendrix music was used.

    • JayBee

Actually, the fact that they did not secure the rights to his music is what makes sense as to why no Hendrix music was used. Most likely they designed the plot around that limitation. I admire your attempt at coming off as an intellectual though.. just a little more practice and you’ll be there!

Ah wasn’t aware of that, thanks for the info. Don’t appreciate that arrogance though, but if it makes you feel special to belittle others by feeling superior than my work is done for today.

  • Killmatic

I saw this at sxsw and 3K did a good job.

  • armvnd.

i’m just kinda thrilled that this actually came to fruition. been talks of 3Stacks playing Jimi for years now. it’s just a cool thing to see.

  • Dave

    Jimi was the fuckin man.

  • Saw at TIFF last year, phenomenal film.
