Childish Gambino Talks New Mixtape, Jaden Smith, Freestyles & More on Hot97

blame it on Meka September 8, 2014

Childish Gambino sat down with the Hot 97 jockey the other day, where he talked everything from not being the best person to keep in contact with, his upcoming Gangsta Grillz mixtape STN MTN/Kauai, being black in America, Jaden Smith and his involvement in the mixtape, and much more.

Donald has had a busy few weeks, co-directing Jhené Aiko’s new video “The Pressure, portraying Spider-Man in the animated series, and – of course – rapping his head off.

UPDATE: Mr. Glover also hit the radio waves with a few bars.

    Gambino is winning right now

  • Frank Kennedy

    I can’t wait. I’m so happy.

    • _AudiiO

As happy as when you suck my cock faggot tits

      • Frank Kennedy

        aight ill like yo comment..

  • fuh q

this dude is one of the most talented people right now

  • Eyinjay

man, he was dropping so many gems

  • Kidd

Freestyle was on point. Gambino the poster child for just being yourself. Can never hate dude for trying to be somebody else.

    • marty mcfly

You giving dude props for being himself? Almost every MC in Hip Hop thats considered dope was being themselves so what. He doesn’t have a choice but to be himself. Corny

      • Kidd

Lmao you took time out yo day to throw hate. In a game FULL of niggas claiming shit they ain’t even bout yes I’m giving him praise. And corny to you my friend. Your opinion is not fact and judging from the rest of the comments you’re in the minority on the gambino hate.

        • marty mcfly

You can call it hate if you want but there’s ALOT of rappers how are themselves behind a microphone so if somebody is being truthful about who they are in their rhymes that doesn’t necessarily strike me as being that different. Again, you can call it hate if you want. I dont hate any rapper in Hip Hop to be honest. Thats too deep of an emotion to actually hate somebody cause you dont feel they raps. Now I may not agree that they raps is dope but I dont hate any rapper.

          • Kidd

Let me clarify then. The salt you throwing is better. And sure bruh but judging from the game they ain’t many who are and the few who are stay catching charges or are in and outta prison.

          • marty mcfly

I dont know who you listening to then cause it really aint that hard to recognize real. Dilated, Common, Currensy, Torae, Fabolous, fucking Wiz Khalifa etc… I mean there are alot of MCs who rap and sound like they really are who they say they are. The fact that Gambino maybe just being himself when he raps don’t mean he dope though.

          • Kidd

To you for the hundredth time then bruh. You got like this desire to have everybody feel and recognize the same shit you do bruh. Gambino nice on the mic to rapping wise, singing wise, and comedy wise. And the rappers you named are the FEW. Now I’m practically 98% sure judging off simply reading your comments that you are now the equivalent of the average persons parents when they say “my generations music was better” literally every generation says that to the next so I suggest you accept that and simply look for the gems (to you) that remind you of your glory days

          • marty mcfly

You saying I want people to feel the same as me? I never said anything like that. You say those are the few? Its a long list of rappers who actually kick real shit so I mean, I dont know whats so impressive to you about being yourself when alot of rappers are themselves when they rap. Now your saying what kinda music I look for to remind of the glory days? Thats not the kinda music fan I am.

          • Kidd

You commented on my post cause you obviously confused as to what I enjoyed and then said foh on your own post obviously directed at the commenters commending bino and also asking niggas what was so good. An average person can see that you not getting what people enjoying and must think this nigga disrespecting rap with his weird and or “gay” self. And I commend him for being himself in a rap game full of people like you who have an already pictured version of what a rapper should be.

          • marty mcfly

Well I think you got some assumed view of what I think if I dont like what you like. Now if you mad cause I said something about him being weird or gay? I mean, lets not act like I’m the first person to say that cause even fans of this guys music have had to have thought the same things by now at least a few times. Aside from any of that though, I just dont think dude is nice with the rhymes. I mean I’ve heard people say that and I’ve heard a number of songs from this dude and lyrically? I dont hear it. That doesn’t mean that whatever assumed perception of what you believe I think Hip Hop is is how I feel. I just dont think he nice period.

          • Kidd

And that’s cool bruh. I don’t think everyone is nice either but I do think that about gambino and on the way he dresses may equal he’s gay I just don’t judge niggas off shit like that cause I grew up knowing dudes who were a lil “sensitive” and ended getting all kind of play so I guess I just don’t instantly jump to oh he gay with shit now unless it’s just blatantly obvious.

          • marty mcfly

Ok thats fine but I didnt rush to call him gay either. This is the first time I have ever implied such about Gambino. Now I have thought it before but never said it. My thing is this, people will say im wrong for it but in the back of their mind they know exactly why I would say such and thats because they have already thought the same thing. Whether he’s gay or not is not really of any concern but I would say, if just for coming off as sensitive or feminine or straight up gay makes you a dope MC? Then the bar for dopeness these days is low.

          • Kidd

Thing is dude ain’t an MC. If that’s what you like then I can understand what you’re saying more now and I’ll say that there is a lack of MC’s in the game now so I’ll agree there. But thing is MC’s ain’t always rappers and rappers ain’t always MCs. There were more combinations of those back in the day but now not so much it’s a more clear like between the two. But also there ain’t a lot of MCs who can put quality projects together so I’ll always pick a rapper over a strict MC.

          • marty mcfly

Ok well thats all I was saying. I mean I’ll give him that line where he said “Took her to a Clippers game, niggas aint invited”… I mean thats fucked up lol but it was clever though but alot of those other rhymes, not so much. I think the musicality argument makes sense but not beyond a certain degree because if somebody is putting focus on bars they can still put together good music. If people are gonna make a comparison to Drake with Gambino (in case some people do that)? I mean, once you take away the melody and the singing and flowing and shit, Drake still got bars so a artist can have both musicality and bars (and no Drake is not the most skilled MC but you can tell the same emphasize thats put on the other parts of his songs are also put behind the lyrics). Not mad at the ones who dont because it is a difficult balance but when people say something is nice or dope, sometimes I just wanna know what rhymes they talking about? That all

          • Kidd

I think a lot of the times with drake and gambino and dudes like them is that people get used to seeing them in a certain light that when they drop some solid shit it’s kinda amplified cause they ain’t expect it. Like a nigga who strikes out every time he’s up to bat but suddenly gets a light hit to outfield and gets to second. People will treat that almost as if it was a home run just cause it was a surprise so to me drake and gambino in the female esque rap lane that when they spit a verse outside of that people will almost always think it’s dope

          • Mez D

Gambino isn’t a wizard with the lyrics, he makes good music though. He did go in on this video good verses don’t always have quotables but the rhyme scheme/flow was dope.

          • marty mcfly

The thing is some people be like oh this nigga got rhymes? And when you say what rhymes are you talking about? They dont even know so they come with oh well he’s just himself. Ok well I dont know if artists should just get points for being the person they are cause if thats the case, I mean thats an extremely easy way to get the stamp of being dope.

  • ajay ali

hearing them have that conversation about white people having power in the world, makes Kanyes rants seem a lot more logical

  • DiscountDoubleCheck

Holy shit he bodied that freestyle

  • marty mcfly

FOH. What was nice about those rhymes? Honestly the shit was weird and I dont know if this dude is gay or not but his delivery comes across as being feminine as hell. Dear Hip Hop, lets not go in this direction.

    • Shizz/Youth35

I don’t understand how you didn’t think his freestyle was nice. Not to mention it was actually a freestyle. Delivery doesn’t matter unless it’s written. Juggling words and concepts in your mind is not supposed to be easy when you’re freestyling. Listen to his music, nothing wrong with him bro.

      • marty mcfly

        What rhymes was nice?

    • MewLover34

      -1

      • marty mcfly

What rhymes were dope then? I mean since this is such a nice freestyle? What about it is nice? Thats all in saying. There aint no wrong or right answer to whether a rhyme is dope or not so you could potentially pick any of those bars but I just wanna know? What rhymes you people think is nice cause I heard one dope bar outta about 32 imo.

        • ILLY

I didn’t really get into it until about 2:35. Dope bars are all about perspective. Most of these bars were dope to me because they were commentary on his real life situation in a concise manner. Most rappers—fuck that, most people—are not capable of getting their point across in so few words. It’s a sign of good writing. Even if he’s not the rapper with the most punchlines, he’s a very capable writer, and it really does show in his work. I think he gets across a lot of complete ideas in this freestyle, and people are more impressed by that than the “bars” you’re [not really] searching for. Anyway, if you think the Clippers line was clever, I’d say “My girl a centaur” is in the same vein of cleverness.

          • marty mcfly

I guess man but whatever you call that shit it just wasn’t dope imo.

  • _AudiiO

Childish Gambino is my favorite female rapper! :-*

    • Frank Kennedy

Didn’t know that someone being themselves makes them a female. Don’t know what that’d make you, mr Pikachu

  • $nicka

Fuck what anyone says really the man is the realest and if his non stereotypical appearance and lifestyle gets you weirded off then its your loss. Dude is genuine with what he says and does and can make some dope ass music

    • _AudiiO

and he sucks my ass real good!

  • Icey

If you try to say those verses weren’t fire then you’re a fucking liar.

    • Mez D

      bruh you got bars

    • _AudiiO

damn bruh how you so lyrical with your brain waves

  • 32gq
