Yasiin Bey Talks Leaving America, Musical Rejuvenation, & More to BeatsHQ

Let’s be honest: at some point, we have all wondered what, exactly, is going on with the artist formerly known as Mos Def these days. Musically silent since 2009’s The Ecstatic, it had felt that he’d been in the headlines for non-musical reasons (child support issues, that brutal force-feeding video) instead. While some of his (older) songs have appeared in an Apple commercial and a weird advert for Las Vegas’ The Cosmopolitan, it wasn’t until he popped up with A$AP Rocky in London and announced that he will guest-star on his upcoming sophomore LP At.Long.Last.A$AP that fans have finally seen some semblance of new tunes from the eclectic, reclusive artist.

That somewhat changes today, however, as he’s broken a bit of silence and sat down with Beats by Dre – in London, nonetheless – to speak in length on a variety of topics. He explains his reason for relocating outside of America and how it has helped him musically, where he is at mentally, and much more. This is one of the few times that we get an interview from Mos that’s longer than 30 seconds, so I’d definitely suggest you watch it above.
