Detroit artist Phil Swish plans to release his Black Wool album in the coming months, but while his fans wait, Swish gives a little taste of what’s to come on Trials & Triumphs, an EP released to hold fans over until the album comes out later in 2015.

Lasting five songs, Phil Swish showcases his flows over mostly soul samples discussing what the project’s title says: his trials and triumphs. He says, “some days there’s like no sun rays in sight, and on those days I like to grab me a page and write, and at those moments I would jump out my cage to flight,” on “The Veil” featuring a soothing harmony from Paris Ambrea along Swish’s decent tune. Other highlights include the intro, “Longevity,” and the final track, “Horizons,” which uses the same sample as Freddie Gibbs and Madlib’s “Shame.”

Check out the EP, which came out just over a week ago, and be on the lookout for visuals coming from the project soon.
