Complex’ Magnum Opus has re-introduced some of hip hop’s most discernible songs into new lights, going beyond the music to showcase their creation, inspiration and cultural impact. From Common’s “The Light” to A$AP Rocky’s “Purple Swag,” songs old and new have received new life with the mini-documentary series.

Today is a particularly special one for me, as it discusses a song from one of my personal influences: Gang Starr. A crowning achievement from their 1994 album Hard To Earn, “Mass Appeal” was one of the many, many moments where the creative energies of DJ Premier and the late Guru reached a cohesive pinnacle and produced some of rap music’s most amazing moments. Now, Primo, Jadakiss, Phat Gary of Empire Management, Fat Joe, Big Shug and others discuss the song’s edifying significance and legacy in the latest episode. Watch below.
