I have such a weird infatuation with the Migos. Being honest, I didn’t like or understand their music in the beginning. I mean, one song featured them literally saying only “Versace” for a good 45 seconds straight: not exactly ground-breaking stuff. However, they kept staying around and – to me – now display an rather dense sense of lyricism that has been both copied (the now-infamous “Migos Flow”) and understated. Sure, they might be talking about the most materialistic, misogynistic and armaments-happy things out,but they do it in such a dexterous manner.
Which sometimes makes me cringe at times when I actually do listen to their music. I’ll play songs like “One Time” without hesitation, but the grown-up in me won’t think twice about listening to a “Pipe It Up.” So when I checked out “Recognition,” it’s essentially their version of the age-old adage of rappers who talk about their struggles on their path to success. Sure, it’s about as “deep” as a wading pool, but since I know how Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff can be this is as vulnerable as we’ll get. And in that sense, I can appreciate that.
