Straight Outta Compton, the N.W.A. biopic, is set to come out August 14. To promote, Ice Cube and director F. Gary Gray stopped by Dr. Dre’s Apple Music’s Beats 1 show, The Pharmacy.

During the chat, Cube and Gray discussed why they wanted to make the movie – to focus on “why” the members formed N.W.A. together in the first place.

Dr. Dre also had some news to share: Detox is dead. And the reason it was never released? It just “wasn’t good.” He didn’t want to disappoint fans with a poor product after all the hype. Instead, Dr. Dre will be releasing Compton: The Soundtrack – an album he revealed was inspired while being on set – on August 7th!

“This is something you’re not gonna hear many artists say. The reason why ‘Detox’ didn’t come out is because I didn’t like it. It wasn’t good. The record, it just wasn’t good. I’ma keep it all the way 1000 with you. Seriously, I worked my ass off. I don’t think I did a good enough job, and I couldn’t do that to my fans, and I couldn’t do that to myself, to be perfectly honest with you. I just wasn’t feeling it.”

You gotta respect that. And with a tracklist like this? Man, listen… it’s a perfect blend of O.G.’s (Eminem, Snoop, Cube, Xzibit), current stars (Kendrick, Game) and a talented group of up-and-comers (King Mez, Anderson .Paak, Candice Pillay).
