Juicy J Drops ‘100% Juice’ Mixtape

Spoiler alert: “surprise” project drops aren’t really that shocking anymore since Beyoncé kick-started the trend in 2013. Now music has everybody from Drake down to Dumbledore sneak-dropping albums, EPs, mixtapes, maxi-singles, one-offs, and every other iteration of the term. While some of the projects are well-done and as equally well-received, others could have stayed on the cutting room floor.

Which makes the latest shock-release, this one from Juicy J, relatively interesting. A longtime purveyor – and inventor – of the term #BrilliantIgnorance, you get what you pay for when listening to Sir J of the Juice: party-driven, drug-addled rhymes over some of the most speaker-wrecking basslines known to stereo systems that has been the central focus the Three 6 Mafia co-founder’s rejuvenated second career as the Taylor Gang’s elder statesman/party ambassador. When done right, this combination produces some relatively great results (his last mixtape, Blue Dream & Lean 2, had a fair share of bangers on it), and his new surprise (there’s that word again!) mixtape 100% Juice continues that trend.

Leaving most of the production work to Sonny Digital, 808 Mafia (with Southside, Mike WiLL Made It, Young Chop and Metro Boomin bringing up the rear), Juicy invites the likes of Future, Lil Wayne, Lil Herb G Herbo, Wiz Khalifa, Project Pat, Boosie Badazz and August Alsina along to the 16-track party hosted by DJ Scream.
