Stephen Colbert kicked off his new gig as the successor of David Letterman’s late-night CBS show this week, and despite trading in his faux-conservative persona of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report for a quasi-nerdy-yet-still-hilarious (his comparison of Donald Trump to Oreo cookies was gold), star-studded affair, his cheeky humor and likable personality makes up for his rather novice interviewing expertise.

Tonight’s episode had a familiar face to Colbert: Kendrick Lamar. After being the final musical guest on The Colbert Report in December 2014, Lamar became the first official musical guest on the show tonight (September 9th). K. Dot – sporting cornrows – performed alongside his familiar band mates – including Bilal, Thundercat, and Anna Wise of Sonnymoon – performed a medley of tracks from To Pimp A Butterfly, including “Wesley’s Theory” (which is rumored to be the next video to drop from the album), “King Kunta,” and “U.”
