Ever since the tragic passing of the late, great GOAT producer J Dilla left us in physical form, an abundance of would-be imitators have popped up, trying to replicate the sui generis sonic sounds of the Detroit player. As the old adage goes though: “Often imitated, never duplicated.” Dilla’s extensive attention-to-detail when it comes to sound and its nuances are so subtle, only the most refined ears can pick it up (ie. Questlove, Q-Tip and the rest of the Ummah).
Brooklyn-based producer/DJ Mentplus may never attain the same auditory tactics as Dilla, but at least his sounds are authentic. They also don’t try to be something it’s clearly not. Yet, the homage in sound is there – the energy, the vibrations, the intricacies – all there.
