Chicago emcee Saba goes behind the boards for a new instrumental EP, SpareChange!. Spanning seven songs, the beat tape contains a mix of spacious hip-hop and electronic sounds. Saba isn’t particularly known as a producer, so it’s no surprise that the beats are a little underdeveloped, but it’s a nice building block for the “Burnout” rapper.
On the project, Saba said that he wanted to separate the sound of his music from his beats:
It was just me in the studio having fun and also trying new things. I’ve been saying I was gonna drop a beat tape for some time now, but I didn’t want them to just sound like the instrumental versions of my own songs, I wanted them to work as songs on their own. There is still a lot to learn and a lot more sounds to expand on, but I’m pretty happy with the way the project turned out.
