The outspoken M.I.A. has always used her music to advocate the betterment and advancement of the downtrodden and oppressed, while speaking on the social injustices that plague the world today. Her latest single “Borders”, upcoming fifth studio album Matahdatah, continues that trend: the song serves as an empowering anthem for both individualistic freedom and community harmony. She has now released a video for the single as well.

Created by M.I.A. and Tom Manaton Art, the video shows Mathangi performing her lyrics, which questions everything from one’s own values and beliefs to the more facile paragons of today, the video once again using vibrant colors (which has since become her calling card for all of her visuals) to depict a multitude of men and women climbing barb wire-covered fences, crossing bodies of waters in banana boats, and other such metaphors for breaking through various borders. Watch the entire video below, and get inspired to break free of your own social constraints.
