During New York’s MLKNOW event J. Cole made news when, during a sit-down with Creed and Black Panther film Ryan Coogler, he revealed that he privately married his longtime love Melissa Heholt in 2015. The full sit-down has now been released, which contains plenty of other gems as well.
As it is his first time ever interviewing anybody Coogler is understandably anxious in the beginning of his talk with Cole, but eventually the two loosen up and speak on a variety of topics: the connection between Coogler’s Fruitvale Station and J. Cole’s “Be Free,” the willingness and acceptance of Black men to be vulnerable in these times, the Black Lives Matter movement, their thoughts on what African-American men and women can do about the societal injustices, and – yes – how marriage changed J. Cole for the better.
