Her is a brief description of mercury retrograde, a term you’ve undoubtedly heard in recent months: “It’s because Mercury rules communication, clear thinking, truth and travel, so when the planet goes retrograde — which means that it looks like it’s going backwards in the sky — all those things go backwards. They start to get ugly and tangle up.” During mercury retrograde, relationships tend to deteriorate and struggle because of communication problems.

Mélat is familiar with this astrological ideal. “I’ve begun to notice lately that every mercury retrograde, my relationships are in turmoil – situations that wouldn’t occur under normal circumstances are happening,” she says. “And I’ll admit it, that sometimes I don’t make the best choices but they often make for the best songs.” One such result is this song, which samples Nas’ “Affirmative Action,” which can be heard below.
