When Marvel set out on their epic Hip-Hop Variants campaign, there were bound to be artists around the world inspired to try their hand at flipping their favorite album covers. Sure, most would fall short—not everyone can make it to the big leagues—but every now and then, a pure gem will surface.

Enter: Tom Velez. Looking at his bio, he’s a freelance designer living in New York City. With a client list that boasts names like Rolling Stone, The Walking Dead and Oprah, and an incredible porfolio, it’s safe to say Mr. Velez is more than qualified to test the waters.

“Inspired by Marvel’s Hip-Hop variants, I made my own which is based on J Cole’s 2014 Forest Hills Drive album cover.”

Check out Tom’s fresh Spider-Man flip of J. Cole’s latest LP below and keep scrolling for a behind-the-scenes look at the process.
