DJ Jazzy Jeff. DJ Premier. DJ Toomp. DJ Kool Herc. These are just a few of the DopeHouse’s favorite turntable wizards. Over the years, the very ideal of the “deejay” has transformed: no longer are they just solely considered glorified jukeboxes, deejays are now as large and as vital as the musicians whose tunes they control.

To shine a better light on the deejay, a new film titled Soundtrack: The Story of the DJ is in the works. The documentary covers the history and evolution of deejaying, as well as the evolution of radio deejays, turntablists, producers, groups, performers and much more. Watch the first trailer for it below, and those who would like to help contribute to the film in any way can head over to the DJ Documentary website.
