If you told me a few years ago that DJ Khaled would become one of the biggest entities in music today, I wouldn’t believe it. I’m not decrying his accomplishments at all, mind you, it’s just that some of today’s top-earning deejays aren’t hip hop at all: they’re either throwing wedding cakes into crowds like Steve Aoki, dominating the EDM world like Calvin Harris, or are being trolled by Kanye West like Deadmau5. Yet here he is, currently sitting atop the mountain, covering Bloomberg Magazine and on Ellen DeGeneres’ couch.
Naturally, it’s not about his actual deejaying talent (which is sometimes on display on his Beats 1 Radio show… sometimes) of course, or even his infamous #DJKhaledCurse. It’s all about his catch phrases and newfound status as a social media icon, and how he’s transformed the way people use and view SnapChat. So, naturally, he talks about “they,” those “major keys,” and all that other stuff he mentions through his camera phone.
