Is Freeway under-appreciated? I can’t attest to living in-the-moment of the rise of Roc-A-Fella, but I’ve always felt Freeway isn’t discussed as much as Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel when it comes to the label’s dominance. Then again, I’m sure it wasn’t difficult to get lost behind the large personalities and talent that are Jay and Beans. But then you look at Philadelphia Freeway, see the type of features it had, the BARS that were spit and the label it was released on and it makes you wonder how it only sold 500,000 copies in an age where platinum albums were coming out quicker than a basketball from Klay Thompson’s palm.
Anyway, the Philadelphia native is gearing up to release his 5th studio album, Free Will, on April 29, and today, we’re graced with the first single, “Hot As Ice.” This album will follow up his Fear Of A Free Planet mixtape he opened up his 2016 campaign with. Freeway is currently battling kidney disease, and he’s on the transplant waitlist for a new kidney amidst recording the new album. “My family is my main motivation to keep pushing,” he told HNHH, “I can’t let them see anything defeat me.”
