Over the weekend, director Baz Luhrmann discussed his upcoming Netflix series, The Get Down, at the Tribeca Film Festival, according to FACT. The series is set to star Jaden Smith, and it’s centralizes around New York in the late 1970s and the birth of hip-hop.
During the discussion, which happened alongside Nelson George, a writer for the series, Luhrmann revealed Nas has been a “huge creative force in the production” of The Get Down.
According to the interview, one of the characters in the series narrates the show through rap. The raps are “somewhere between pure rap, narration, and sort of Greek chorus comment,” Luhrmann said. “We weren’t sure about it when we began, and we couldn’t do without it now. And [Nas has] been fantastic in that regard.”
The Get Down will release sometime in 2016.
