Torii Wolf – “1st” (prod. DJ Premier)

As we discussed in The TENS, DJ Premier‘s style is not confined to just hip-hop. (Dag, “Thank You”?????) I mean, hell, he’s even got a rock band, The BADDER, making loud, high-energy jazz music mixed with his signature scratches. So whenever Preemo has a new artist on his hands, he’s earned the respect over the last three decades to give ’em a look.

So is the case with Torii Wolf, a singer from New York. Today, we get her debut single, the aptly titled “1st,” from her upcoming album, Flow Riiot, which is entirely produced by Preem.

Led by an emotional piano progression, tempo-keeping drums and a flip of Dialated Peoples’ “Good As Gone” (a beat he produced himself, naturally), Torii struggles with a love, fighting the fact that they’re falling out of their feelings at the same time. “You fell in love with me first,” she sings, trying to place blame on her opposition for the way she feels now.

Torii has a bit of Elle Goulding influence to her voice, and I’d like to see how she and Preemo stretch that out across an album. In the meantime, listen to “1st” below.
