This is a somewhat cathartic experience for me. Now, I know. “You’re posting a Mod Sun song. How is this in any sense cathartic?”

Well, rap wasn’t always my first choice when opening up my iPod video — it was often rock, and in ninth grade, more specifically, it was progressive rock. I’d go to shows, and at one of those shows, Mod Sun popped up. He was offering smoke raps and, at the time, was most comparable to Asher Roth. But my friends and I found it pretty out of place at a prog rock show, so we laughed at it and sarcastically (yet seriously) enjoyed some of his music — i.e. “No Girlfriend.” It turned out he was the drummer for one of the headlining bands, and he had this rap act as a side gig.

But here we are several mixtapes and EPs later, and Mod Sun is still rocking with the rap persona, and I’m sitting here writing about rap, somehow. And now I’m writing about Mod Sun, so this is a bit weird for me.

Today, the Minnesota native has delivered a new banging smoke anthem in the form of “Smokin’ What I’m Smokin’ On.” It features D.R.A.M. and Rich The Kid and is produced by Don Cannon, which makes for Mod Sun’s most notable lineup yet, I’m sure. (I can’t be 100 percent sure, because I haven’t kept up with Mod Sun, but I’m sure it’s a pretty good guess.)
