Maxwell’s ‘blackSUMMERS’night’ LP Will Have You In Your Feels

When I was much, much younger, I admittedly didn’t listen to a lot of Maxwell. I mean, why would I when I could get all the feels that I wanted from music from Pharoahe Monch or The Diplomats? As with most things, the more I aged the more I changed, and I started gravitating to his music shortly after a heartbreak removed any sense of invincibility I foolishly thought I had possessed.

To this day I can’t sit through Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black all the way. But I’m digressing.

Now at that stage in his career where he essentially releases albums when he feels like it (which, coincidentally/ironically, has been his entire career), Max has returned with his fifth album — and first in over seven years — blackSUMMERS’night. At a recent listening session he described the album as “from the mind of heartbreak,” and that’s just great: I’ve been in much brighter spirits these days, and I am not trying to be all in my feels while listening to it.

He recently was the musical guest on Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show, performing “Lake By The Ocean.” Watch that below.
