Back in his days as YC the Cynic, Kemba had a song called “Negus” off his album GNK. The song’s themes are quite literally timeless, as they deal with the history of both Kemba’s life and the world, and three years later, it’s out here influencing the name to the Bronx rapper’s first official project under his new moniker. (He dropped a tape full of loosies and previously-recorded material earlier this year called Farewell.)

Landing at 12 songs, Kemba has been working on this project with producer Frank Drake (who also produced GNK) for the last three years.

Over the course of the first three singles — “The New Black Theory,” “Greed” and “Already” — the social and political wit and commentary has been keen, not missing a beat since his last official full-length release in 2013. Expect more of the same, only more controlled, mature and sharpened, on Negus.
