PARTYNEXTDOOR, to much anticipation, finally released his third album P3 after a two-year hiatus. However, according to his sit-down with Rolling Stone he knew that its sonic direction would turn off fans.

In the brief interview with the magazine, Jahron Anthony Brathwaite revealed that he was in a less-than-celebratory mood during his third go-round. Without going too deep into details, he speaks on the “rumored” relationship with Kehlani, and the episode earlier in 2016 which resulted in her almost committing suicide.

“It was a blue year for me. I thought, ‘Write a hit, you’ll be rich and happy.’ Meet one of the most beautiful girls in the world, one of the most talented, and I’ll be happy. All of that: I’m not happy.

…”I regret how it went down,” he says. “Big time I regret how it went down. I look into people’s eyes, and I know they think I’m a bad guy. There’s a lot of details that people don’t know.”

Because of a year in which “the best and worst things happened at once” to him, the mood throughout P3 is a bit more somber than its predecessors.

At the same time, he admits that some might find his melancholia off-putting. “Really pretty people like my music,” he explains, “and social media likes really pretty people.” (Kylie Jenner appeared in his “Come and See Me” video.) “This album is blues — it may push away the pretty people.”
