In all honesty, a Fabolous steeped in nostalgia has arguably produced better music than the “Ma$e-alike” version earlier in his career. Yes, “Breathe” remains his best song (this isn’t debatable), but even that was drenched in soul-sampled perfection courtesy of Just Blaze.

However, since going back on his current, 90s-inspired rap kick, his street releases have been refreshing listens, turning Fab into a model of consistency rarely seen from any New York-reared rap veteran these days. He’s even taken to bringing back his throwback jerseys that was a staple throughout his younger days.

In a cruel twist of irony, Loso dropped the first Summertime Shootout on Thanksgiving 2015. However, on the sequel he drops it shortly before the end of 2016’s cookout season.

With 13 tracks, Summertime Shootout 2: The Level Up finds Fab remodeling previous releases from Rihanna and A-Boogie (With Da Hoodie) as well as Future’s “Check On Me” and DJ Drama’s “Wishing.” Features come from Lil Uzi Vert, Wale, Jazzy, Dave East and Don Q; with production from Don Cannon, !llmind, araabMuzik, and more.
