“Mystery” singers are the new underground rappers.
While this trend isn’t new at this point, it continues to breed some incredible artists… shrouded in mystery. Esteemed “alumnae” of this trend include Ye Ali, Frank Ocean, Bryson Tiller, and PARTYNEXTDOOR. Now, H.E.R. hopes to join the boys club with her own style of melodically mystifying sound.
With her somber and self-titled EP, Volume 1, she has garnered cosigns from the likes of Alicia Keys, Skyzoo and Wyclef Jean. While the singer’s true identity is unknown, signs point to MBK Entertainment/RCA Records’ signee Gabi Wilson as H.E.R. (Wilson’s remix of Drake’s “Jungle”, which hit the Internet in 2015, is the penultimate song on the EP).
Either way the quickstrike release is a wonderful listen, and should not be ignored. Stream Volume 1 below.
