One the last times North Carolina rapper Well$ showed up at the DopeHouse, he was dedicating a song and video to Juvenile and life around the time the Hot Boy dropped his “Ha” visual. His latest addition takes him in a complete different direction as he teams with Lucho for “A Sad Dance Song.”

The song is sad in the content — Well$ raps about falling in love with a girl, the getting heartbroken — but Lucho makes sure the tones of the song don’t get too down-trodden through the synth-heavy and uptempo nature of the production.

Lucho said this beat was originally intended for his, Well$ and Alec Lomami’s BL∆CK HE∆RTS CLUB EP, but once they “found our sound,” he pushed it to the back burner until Well$ heard it and thought it’d be a nice change of pace for his catalog.

“The title highlights the contrast between the sad lyrics and the dance-y instrumental. Basically it’s a drunk college girl’s anthem,” he told us over email. “I tend to incorporate other genres into my shit but every once it a while I like to do collaborations that don’t necessarily scream ‘This is a Well$ song.’ If you can always know what to expect from me where’s the fun in that?”
