Isaiah Rashad’s “Free Lunch” is a work of art in paying homage to the South, from the sound to the references in the lyrics.

Rashad stopped by Genius to break down the lyrics, which contain shout outs to Pimp C, TLC and his friends back home in Tennessee all while painting a vivid reality of common life in the South.

“This is a shout out to my crib really,” he told Genius. “My nigga told me he got on that Coca-Cola that day, 21 dollars an hour. That’s tight. I was reminiscing about what I would have did around everything. ‘Cause my friends ain’t rappin’ but they still found a way to be alright.”

He said the bassline in beat, which he described as “some 2010 J. Cole shit,” kept him around. It was produced by Cam O’bi.
