Pharrell has recently gotten into making music for movies, never making a more successful hit than “Happy,” which has become one of the highest-selling singles ever. This year, though, he was asked to take the reigns on the soundtrack for an entire film — Hidden Figures.

The movie revolves around black astrophysicist and mathematician Katherine Johnson, who, along with other black female coworkers, helped NASA develop trajectories for their space missions, like helping John Glenn (who just died yesterday) become the first astronaut to orbit the Earth.

The soundtrack has features from Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige and Janelle Monáe, who also stars in the movie. Pharrell also worked with Kim Burrell (“I See A Victory“) and Lalah Hathaway (“Surrender“) on the album.

Many of the songs we’ve heard so far, like “Able” and “Crave,” have revolved around Johnson’s perseverance working through a segregated work place yet still coming out on top as one of the primary reasons the U.S. was able to “win” the Space Race. Johnson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.
