Last December, J. Cole kicked off the 4 Your Eyez Only rollout with a short documentary, which talked the often-talked-about “False Prophets,” which was rumored to be a diss toward both Kanye West and Wale. (Wale later responded on “Groundhog Day,” though neither artists were really dissing each other.)

The song used Joey Bada$$’s “Waves” beat, which was produced Freddie Joachim and landed on Bada$$’s 1999 project from 2012.

Recently, Joey stopped by the LA Leakers while promoting his upcoming All-AmeriKKKan Bada$$ album (out April 7). While there, Bada$$ dissected his “Land of the Free” single, the features on the album, his 2Pac comments, acting and more.

He also talked about Cole using the “Waves” beat, which Bada$$ says Cole asked him to use. Originally, Bada$$ thought Cole was asking him to feature on a song, so he went to the studio to find out “False Prophets” was already made.

“He finally got back to doing the things that he used to do, which just made him happy. Like sitting on the couch watching Netflix or going on YouTube and just browsing beats,” Bada$$ said during the interview. “One day he was writing, and he resorted to his old way of writing, which was going on YouTube and writing [to] some beats. … So he comes across the ‘Waves’ beat, and he knew it was mine and everything, but, like, he heard the beat and it just sparked something.

To be honest, I didn’t know [“False Prophets”] was going to be, like, promoting the album. I didn’t know it was going to be on the radio every day. That sh*t is weird, bro,” he said jokingly.

Bada$$ still has a J. Cole feature on All-AmeriKKKan Bada$$ anyway.
