Joey Bada$$ has come a long way from his early days as a young teenager spitting over boom bap beats (given that his debut mixtape, 1999, came out in 2012, a youngster doing that kind of music was seen as an anomaly in rap). Having evolved his sound, his Pro Era crew and his mind, Jozif has turned into one of the brightest minds of his youthful generation.

That evolution was not limited musically, either. Sure, he nabbed his first Gold plaque with his 2016 single “Devastated,” but he has also expanded his horizons into Hollywood with a role on USA’s Mr. Robot. His mind has grown also, injecting socio-economical and politically conscious lyrics into his rhymes.

All of that is on display on his sophomore album, All AmeriKKKan Bada$$ (or, A.A.B.A.). As well as assistance from frequent collaborators Chuck Strangers and Statik Selektah, Joey connects with DJ Khalil, Pac Div’s LIKE, J. Cole (on “Legendary), ScHoolboy Q (on “Rockabye Baby“), Styles P and more. Yes, he’s fully aware of whatever Kendrick Lamar has planned on this day, and he still does not care.
