I know I’m probably beating a dead horse here, but it’s imperative that I reiterate how important Will Sessions‘ sound is to the larger landscape of Hip-Hop and music in general. After providing the live soundtrack to eLZhi‘s incredible 2011 album Elmatic (a reimagining of Nas’ Illmatic, which, by the way, will cost you a cool few dollars), the Detroit band went on to release their highly-underrated Mix Takes sessions one and two.

Now, on April 21, Will Sessions will finally release their debut album, Deluxe, comprised of “tracks previously available as limited press 7” records, freshly remixed and remastered.” So far, the project has birthed the singles “Lost Without You” with Amp Fiddler and “Cherry Juice” featuring Allan Barnes of The Blackbyrds.

Today, Detroit soul singer Coko Buttafli (Funk Night Records) joins Will Sessions’ on their latest jam, “Run, Don’t Walk Away.” Although drenched in heavy funk and soul, the new single is a far cry from a Motown Records “hit.” Instead, this soul-revivalist banger could easily be mistaken for a deep cut from a Stax/Volt Records stash, which is a comparison I’m fairly sure all parties involved wouldn’t be mad at.
