While Statik Selektah is known for digging for the perfect sample to flip, it is perhaps the sample he was introduced to and flipped for Joey Bada$$‘s “Legendary” (featuring J. Cole) that will have heads talking for years to come.

Sitting down with Genius, Statik breaks down the making of his All AmeriKKKan Badass banger. In the brief segment, Statik reveals how he obtained the sample (“Thembisa (The People)” by South African jazz-pianist Andile Yenana), as well as his process of deconstructing the original sample and layering/rearranging the sounds to his liking.

The kicker? Statik reveals that as soon as the record was finished, Nas’ very own management hit him up requesting to “Hold that. We want that,” continuing “This is like the second or third time in a year that Nas has done that. He wanted “Smoke Break.” As soon as the 2 Chainz record came out, they hit me like ‘Hold that. We want that.'”
