‘Marvel 101’ Explainer Dives Into Infinity Gauntlet & Infinity Stones

blame it on JES7 April 29, 2017

If you’re a casual comic book reader who enjoys Marvel’s cinematic world building, but are confused with the MCU’s maguffins: the Infinity Stones (or gems, as they’re known in the comics), then Marvel Entertainment’s explainer videos for both the stones and the Infinity Gauntlet will help catch you up to speed.

While the cinematic introduction of Tony Stark/Iron Man in 2008, and it’s succeeding films The Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger may have been building toward 2012’s The Avengers, make no mistake: the high stakes and drama that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes faced over the course of nearly a decade have been shaping the events that will be finally explored in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War.

Although not many details have been revealed for the upcoming, world-changing event, it is known that the real big bad of the MCU’s three phases, Thanos, will set out on a quest to track down every Infinity Stone before wielding them all in the Infinity Gauntlet, granting the giant, purple-hued alien absolute power to rule over the entire universe and the ability to manipulate time, space and reality while gaining mastery over the mind and soul.

So far, five of the six stones have appeared throughout eight films: the Tesseract (space stone) in Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor and The Avengers, the Aether (reality stone) in Thor: The Dark World, the Orb (power stone) in Guardians of the Galaxy, the Eye of Agamotto (time stone) in Doctor Strange and the Chitauri scepter (mind stone) in both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron, leaving only the soul stone left.

Educate yourself on the capabilities of each stone in the explainer video above, and what may happen when The Mad Titan finally collects all six stones into the gauntlet below—and watch the latest trailers for Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok out this year.
