Ludwig Göransson On Making Childish Gambino’s “Redbone”

Childish Gambino’s …Awaken, My Love! single “Redbone” — outside of recently being remixed by CeeLo Green — was certified platinum this week. It might be the most memorable moment off one of the more memorable albums from last year.

The six-minute opus into a crumbling relationship never quite hits the fever pitch it seems its leading up to sonically, but that adds to the beauty of the song as Gambino’s falsetto rings through the chorus about staying wearing of the people you surround yourself with.

Ludwig Göransson – Gambino’s longtime producing partner — recently broke down the instrumental and the making of the song with Genius. He said it all started with a drum loop Gambino had made before Göransson came over. Then they just went from instrument to instrument tinkering with sounds before they landed on certain progressions that sounded nice.

Göransson went though each instrument — the bass, synthesizers, glockenspiels, the whole nine — and explained his reasoning for playing them how they did.
