Late last week, a jury ruled the officer charged of manslaughter in the murder of Philando Castile was not guilty. It’s yet another unsurprising verdict when it comes to police killing innocent, unarmed black people in America. The murder was live-streamed on Facebook by his fiancé, who was sitting in the car next to him as he was killed. Her daughter was in the back seat.
Rhode Island rapper Khary pays tribute to the slain man with his new song, “Trappin Demo,” which directly addresses the exploitation of black people and black culture by white America and the contradictions faced once it comes to treating black people equal. “Why you listen to our songs if you gon’ treat our melodies as a felony?” Khary questions.
