Here’s the thing about Kevin Gates.

After being convicted of battery and sent to jail for six months, the Baton Rouge rapper was slated to be released from a Florida jail on March 29th. And he was… for roughly 24 hours.

The following day, he turned himself in to a Chicago jail to serve time for an outstanding warrant from a gun case in 2013. Keep in mind, his debut album Islah shortly went Gold just before the Florida stint. While all of this has slowed down his momentum, it hasn’t entirely derailed his career as a new single “What If” has been released.

The song interpolates Joan Osborne’s 1995 single “What If God Was One Of Us,” which — while seemingly unexpected — makes total sense, as previous interviews have spotlighted Kevin’s quirky musical sensibilities.

UPDATE (9/6): Five months after its release, Kevin Gates shares a matching video. Unfortunately, the Baton Rouge rapper is still incarcerated.
