Jamila Woods Returns With Powerful New Single, “Giovanni”

blame it on Meka October 18, 2018

Her first new music since her 2017 album HEAVN, Jamila Woods returns with a new single “Giovanni.”

Accompanied by a self-directed short film, “Giovanni” is named after famed poet Nikki Giovanni and is inspired by her poem “Ego Tripping (there may be a reason why).” “It is a song about owning and celebrating all the parts of myself,” Woods says about the track. “It’s about legacy and lineage, and how the love & strength of the people who made me makes me feel invincible.”

The video, co-directed by Vincent Martell, has cameos from performance artist Po’ Chop, teaching artist and scholar Dominique James, former Chicago Youth Poet Laureate E’mon Lauren, hair artist Mo G, yoga instructor and youth programming director Kesha Daniels-Rush (Woods’ cousin), and author/healer Philippa Norman (Woods’s mother).
