Lyricism is the backbone of hip hop. Although there are a ton of rappers who aren’t saying a gotdamn thing, there are those who are exceptionally gifted at putting words together over a beat. And with so many songs dropping during any given month, we feel that those rhymes that combine lyrical dexterity and cleverness with verbal gymnastics should be celebrated.

Each month, we’ll spotlight five or so of the finest offerings and leave it up to you to vote who had the “2Dope Verse Of The Month.” After we tally the votes, we’ll post the winner of the fan vote as well as who The DopeHouse thought put together an excellent display of lyricism.

Last month, Nas took the crown with his poignant verse on Robin Thicke’s “Deep.” Despite Eminem taking the fan-vote for his “Campaign Speech.”

This month was filled with verses ranging from inspirational (Dave East on “Wrote My Way Out”) to politically charged (KXNG Crooked’s final verse on “I Want To Kill You”), from braggadocio (Rapsody’s second verse on “2AM”) to lyrically dense (Royce 5’9”’ on Marv Won’s “Suicide Squad”). Q-Tip showed fans that, decades into his rap career, he can still get down with the best of them (“Black Spasmodic“). Common has grown to become one of rap’s most introspective lyricists of all time (“Little Chicago Boy“). But the dark horse candidate of the month has to be Shia LeBeouf’s verbal destruction when he took on Sway’s “5 Fingers Of Death” challenge.
