UGHH recently chopped it up with Haircut, a/k/a Mayer Hawthorne outside of Great Scott’s in Allston, MA, and the following is what ensued. Check for part two after the jump.
“I think Mayer is the only artist in the history of the label that I’ve signed after hearing only two songs, sometimes, you just know it’s the right thing to do.” – Peanut Butter Wolf. While the name Mayer Hawthorne rings bells only recently, Hawthorne has established himself as a well known producer and DJ in the underground hip hop scene since the mid-90s as part of the seminal rap group Athletic Mic League and soul trio Now On. Hawthorne takes time out to sit down with UGHH.com and discuss the origins of his first solo masterpiece, “A Strange Arrangement.” The content of the album can be most simply be classified as retro-soul, and was released on Stones Throw Records earlier this year.
