Most projects influenced by legendary artists are grain-of-salt worthy debacles that more often than not foul up the air of music. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten everything from Teena Marie tapes to Jimmy Buffet mishaps this year alone. So, it was rather surprising to hear femme fatale Raven Sorvino’s (of Language Artz fame) Inspired project, which is much more than a cheap cover of fallen angel Aaliyah (who she sometimes resembles at the right angle). Instead, it takes some of the best parts from some of Baby Girl’s best moments and incorporates them into entirely new backdrops for Raven to spit over. The results: a lot better than you think it will be. Rapsters, take note: this is how you make a project using a deceased artist as its influence.
Anyways, the Language Artz’ first lady had a show at Santa Monica’s Zanzibar, and she brought a few friends along for the ride. And don’t forget to cop Inspired, one of the better projects of this year.
