When I first caught wind that Universal Studios gave The Abbot $20 mill to play with and make a dope kung-fu flick, I was stupid hyped and impatient to see the final outcome. That hype only heightened when I found out he enlisted Russell Crowe, Lucy Liu, Pam Grier, Jamie Chung (yes, from MTV’s Real World) and Eli Roth, and Quentin Tarantino (who presents the film). Then the tracklist for the soundtrack leaked, and quickly became one of the most anticipated albums of the last quarter. And by these five or six leaks, so far, so good.
Check out Daniel Isenberg’s sit down with RZA where he talks behind-the-scenes of the soundtrack. On Six Directions of Boxing:
RZA: “U-God set it off. At one point, we didn’t have Deck on it. I was like, ‘Hold on, we need Deck on here.’ He usually starts off, but he’s at the end. I’m proud of this song because, this is one of the first songs [in a while] that has this many members of Wu rapping back-to-back. And I called it ‘Six Directions of Boxing’ because every direction is covered.
“Those brothers ripped it. And for me, it’s a privilege, because it completes having the entire Wu-Tang Clan on the soundtrack. So we got the whole Wu-Tang Clan on the soundtrack, and the son of ODB [who raps on the final song on the soundtrack].”
