Lupe Fiasco and myself may have had our issues in the past, but I’ve always tried to keep my ear to what he was saying as I was still a fan of his music. The blame of leaks and character defamation is what caused the “ban” but that’s another story…

For his latest single, Lu has chosen to take Cancer head on and provide a song to help empower those facing it, celebrate those that have survived and remember those who have passed.

Cancer sucks. And while I’ve always “known” that, it wasn’t until recently that I became fully aware of the disease’s control. I lost my grandfather a few weeks back to it, and my grandmother  is currently battling it as I type. So while my mom’s mom continues with her weekly chemo treatments, blood tests and everything else, I’ve been trying to be as supportive as I can and help in anyway possible. Reading any article that may help inform me more of the disease and what it’s doing to her body, planning events to help raise money for cancer research and so on. So when Lu’s new single “Mission” flew across my timeline, I knew I had to press play.

With an inspiring introduction from various cancer survivors telling their story, anchored by legendary singer/songwriter and cancer survivor Charlie Wilson, “Mission” has Lupe Fiasco expressing stories of the emotional burden of cancer, while also working to uplift those in an effort to help fight the disease.

In support of “Mission,” Lupe has teamed up with Stand Up To Cancer, a grassroots movement to raise funds to accelerate the pace of cancer research, as a celebrity ambassador.

Although I still don’t really know where we stand at this point, I want to say that I appreciate Lupe for doing this and hope the collaboration with SU2C helps with the ongoing battle. I’ve picked up the song on iTunes and can’t wait to play it for my special lady as she continues to beat this stupid disease.
