Tragedy hits hip hop once again, as it’s been reported that Big Bank Hank of the Sugarhill Gang lost his battle to cancer earlier this morning.

Born Henry Jackson, one of the original members of the Sugarhill Gang – who famously notched the first-ever mainstream rap hit in 1979 with “Rapper’s Delight” – passed away early Tuesday morning at around 2am in New York City. His group mates Wonder Mike and Master Gee only left a brief message to TMZ, saying, “So sad to hear of our brother’s passing. Rest in peace Big Bank.”

We will update you with more news as they come.

And, of course, you can’t forget their song “Apache” which would forever be immortalized thanks to The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air.
